Day 3- Bangkok 2018

March 27, 2018

Watch day 3 starting from 27:05 of my trip diary video:

I followed the chapter on the Bangkok Yai canal in the book 22 Walks in Bangkok.

From my friend’s place near the Phaya Thai metro station, I took the BTS metro to Saphan Thaksin station. Below it is the Sathorn pier. I took the ferry that runs along the Chao Phraya River to Si Phaya pier and got off.

The River City Mall is beside that pier. That mall is famous for old maps and antiques. I popped in to look at some old maps but the prices were beyond my budget.

I took a cross-river ferry at the Si Phaya pier that crosses the Chao Phraya to the other side of that river. I got off at Klong San market.

I made my way to various spots following the book. Here are some places I went to:

Signal Flagpole:

Pong Patchamit Fort:

Photos of the area surrounding the fort and on my way to the Psychiatry Musem:

Somdet Chaophraya Institute of Psychiatry:

Photos of the area surrounding that hospital and my walk to the Princess Mother Memorial Park.

Princess Mother Memorial Park:

I got a little lost going there. I was just following Google Maps and the alleys were really small and a bit tricky. You can watch this to see what I mean. (If it didn’t auto-load at the right spot, fast forward to 16:33 of my trip video.)

After leaving the park, I saw these three cool pieces of graffiti on houses right outside the park exit.

Here are photos I took on my way from the park to the Memorial Bridge.

I stopped by a cafe for some snacks.

After that, I walked along the waterfront:

Santa Cruz Church:

Kuan An Tieng Chinese Shrine:

Spotted this guy feeding pigeons:

Wat Kanlayanamit Temple and its environs:

Bang Luang Mosque:

I photographed what I thought was the Bang Luang Mosque, but after I got home and looked it up, I think i only photographed the Islamic Center beside it. The mosque itself is right beside that center, but I must have been too tired then to walk some more and didn’t see it.

The entrance to the neighborhood where the temple is is in this tiny alley.

The neighborhood is situated along a canal.

After that I walked along a footbridge to get to Wat Arun. Here are some photos I took from the footbridge. I even spotted a placard with information about the Bangkok Yai canal.

I boarded the cross river ferry to go back to the other side of the Chao Phraya river. I landed in Tha Tien pier, that’s near the area where the Grand Palace and the old town is.
