These series of photos were made during my stay of a little over three months in Chile in 2014. A lot of the themes in these are not much of a surprise, as they recur in my work: night, man-altered landscape (storefronts, signs), transportation, found objects, and the rare, occasional “people” photograph. These are pretty much the only things I photograph for the past 9 years.
I lived in Renaca, a suburb of Vina del Mar, which is a 30-40 minute bus ride away from Valparaiso, one of the street art Meccas of the world. I have been shooting street art and graffiti since 2005, and the photos I made there are great additions to my collection of graffiti and street art from places I’ve visited.
I did not expect to be photographing stray dogs (and the occasional brave cat), at least, not enough to seriously make a series about it. But these strays were a fixture of the Chilean landscape, and not to make a series about them would make my life goal of studying and documenting man-altered landscape incomplete.
